OpenAI has decided to delay the release of a new tool for recognizing AI-generated content for the time being. While the company claims that the tool is highly accurate, there are concerns about possible manipulation and accessibility for non-English speaking users.

Search for reliable identification methods

In an earlier blog post, OpenAI announced that they were developing various techniques to identify content specifically created by their AI models. However, according to a recent Wall Street Journal report, plans to release these tools have been delayed due to internal discussions about potential drawbacks.

OpenAI has updated their original blog post in response to this report. They indicate that there is no concrete date for the launch yet, even though at least one tool would be highly accurate and even resistant to local manipulation attempts.

Detection challenges

One of the main reasons for the delay is that there are still ways for malicious parties to evade detection. This makes OpenAI reluctant to make the tool publicly available. In addition, there is a concern that non-English language users could be disadvantaged when using AI writing tools, because there is a loophole in the system where English text can be translated into another language to avoid detection.

Current state of affairs

Currently, there are several products on the market that claim to be able to recognize AI-generated content. However, none of these tools have shown a high level of accuracy in independent research. OpenAI's discovery tool would be the first internally developed system that uses invisible watermarks and proprietary detection methods, specifically focused on content generated by their models.

OpenAI continues to work on a solution that is both effective and fair for all users, regardless of language or background. The company stresses the importance of due care in this process, given the potential impact on different user groups.
